How To Turn Off / On Background Apps in Windows 10

Are you noticing that your Windows 10 PC is running slower than usual? It could be because of background apps consuming your system resources. Here's how to manage them effectively.

Method 1: From Settings

  • Right-click the Windows icon and select Settings or press Windows Key + I.
  • Click on Privacy, then navigate to Background apps.
  • You'll see a toggle on the right side. You can switch this on or off based on your preference.
  • To close all background apps, turn off the toggle under "Let apps run in the background".
  • To choose specific apps, go to "Choose which apps can run in the background" and select which ones to close.

Note: This method applies to Microsoft Store apps.

Method 2: From Group Policy Editor

Disable Background Apps for all users with the Group Policy Editor:

  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App Privacy.
  • Double-click on the "Let Windows apps run in the background" policy in the right pane.
  • Select the "Disabled" option, then click Apply and OK.
